Grands Level ratings
Level 1: I have no or very limited tennis experience.
Level 1.5: I have limited tennis experience and I'm is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.
Level: 2: I need on-court experience. I have obvious stroke weaknesses but I'm familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play.
Level 2.5: I'm learning to judge where the ball is going although my court coverage is weak. I can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.
Level 3: I'm fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but I'm not comfortable with all strokes and lacking execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. I need to work on depth and variety.
Level 3.5: I have achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacking depth and variety. I'm starting to exhibit more aggressive net play and have improved court coverage.
Level 4: I have dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. I'm starting to master the use of power and spins (though tends to over-hit difficult shots). I may lose rallies due to impatience.
Level 4.5: I'm starting to master the use of power and spins; I can handle pace, have sound footwork, can control depth of shots and I'm beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. I can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. I might have played varsity or college club tennis.
Level 5: I'm starting to master the use of power and spins; I can handle pace, have sound footwork, can control depth of shots and I'm beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. I can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. I might have played varsity or college club tennis.
Level 5.5: I have developed power and/or consistency as a major weapon. I can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hit dependable shots in a stress situation.
Level 6: I have had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior and collegiate levels and have obtained a sectional and/or national ranking.
